“Assembling” the Ideal Learner: The School Assembly as Regulatory Ritual

Pages 326-344 | Published online: 16 Sep 2015

Notes

The notion of discipline as a pervasive force that codifies behaviour according to what is regarded as desirable, must be distinguished from a school's localised system of reward and punishment which is only one element in the broader disciplinary apparatus that operates within any school context.

Bernstein (1975) makes a similar argument about school assemblies, as key conduit of the school's expressive order, albeit from a different epistemological perspective.

This refers to an area that is both residential and business. In the case of Ubuntu High the location comprised a mix of classes and cultures.

Pastoral here is used in the empirical sense to refer to community context of schooling where educators are generally considered to be responsible for learners' cognitive development, but also for their wellbeing. This differs from more theoretical concepts such as Foucault's notion of the confessional.
