1 Officially entitled the “Growth and Opportunity Project,” this report was commissioned by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus in the wake of Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential election defeat. It was designed to critically investigate the party’s losses and recommend a plan to both grow the party and improve Republican campaigns at the national level. 2 The “Latin@ gender gap” constitutes what Christina Bejarano has called a “modern gender gap,” with Latinas expressing more liberal political views and behaviors than their male counterparts. In other words, the gender gap among Latin@s reflects a difference between Latina women and Latino men in terms of the depth of their support for Democratic candidates and issues. However, data compiled over the 2012 elections suggests that more than 50 percent of both Latinas and Latinos consistently preferred Obama to Romney, even as Latina support for Obama outpaced Latinos in most battleground states.
