Psychometric Exploration of the Sexual Addiction Screening Test in Veterans

Abstract

Patrick CitationCarnes (1989) developed the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST) to identify individuals at risk for sexual addiction. Using two groups of veterans from an addictions treatment program (N = 313, N = 316), this research explored the psychometric properties of the SAST and explored the feasibility of reducing the length of the SAST. Results suggested that the SAST measured a single construct with excellent reliability and acceptable convergent and divergent validity. Examination of the shortened SAST provided some initial support for a six-item SAST version. Finally, a wide-ranging pattern of significant correlations between personality disorders and sexual addiction emerged.
