A qualitative study of sexually addicted women

Pages 43-53 | Published online: 08 Nov 2007

Abstract

The behaviors and social context of sexual addiction in women were studied. Eighteen self-identified female sex addicts completed a structured interview. Independent raters evaluated audiotapes of the interviews. Females had a high frequency of fantasy sex, seductive role sex, voyeuristic sex, and anonymous sex. They had a low frequency of intrusive sex and exploitive sex. Carnes' model of sexual addiction was highly applicable, although women engaged in more passive forms of sexual behavior. Clinicians may overlook sexual addiction in female clients.
