Intelligent Reasoning in the Generation of Alternative Sequences for Feature-Based Process Planning

ABSTRACT

This paper presents an approach to operation sequencing which takes into consideration many of the constraints and criteria commonly accepted in planning prior to the consideration and selection of resources. A multistep approach is implemented that involves the generation of potential sequences through the intelligent analysis of feasibility constraints, followed by the evaluation of the resulting sequences based on a set of optimality criteria. A prototype system for rotational parts was developed which uses an object-oriented paradigm. This system is demonstrated for two example parts to show the utility of the approach to parts of varying complexity.
