ABSTRACT

A methodology for the integration of manufacturing process planning and real-time scheduling in a feature-based manufacturing environment is presented. Most research in this area focuses upon narrowly-defined topics that fail to address the problem of this integration. In order to achieve process planning and scheduling integration, this paper introduces an approach in which process planning and scheduling problems are structured in an object-oriented paradigm, and knowledge-based rules are integrated with each object for planing and scheduling reasoning in a feature-based environment. Features will be used as information carriers across manufacturing planning and scheduling.

The integrated feature-based process planning and scheduling methodology could lead to possible elimination of conflicts between process planning and scheduling and reducing disruptions in production due to machine breakdown or other problems. Therefore, better manufacturing efficiency and flexibility can be achieved.
