Announcement of HERA's Papers of Year 2010

Pages 283-286 | Published online: 11 Apr 2011

The editors of HERA are pleased to announce the selection of Papers of Year 2010. We are proud of the high quality mix of papers that are published annually in our journal. Selection of papers of the year is a special pat on the back for authors whose peers recommended it.

Selection of papers of the year begins with the HERA Editorial Board. This group of distinguished scientists and risk assessment professionals nominated papers for consideration, which was compiled into a catalog of 25 nominated papers. From this catalog, HERA's senior editors for human health and ecological risk assessment selected the HERA Papers of Year 2010 within their specialty areas. The risk communication/perception paper of the year was selected by HERA's Managing Editor, with advice from the journal's Senior Editor for Risk Communication/Perception. HERA's Editors-in-Chief were responsible for selecting the risk management paper of the year and for considering the integration of human and ecological risk assessment paper of year 2010. The selection criteria for all four categories were twofold: a) degree of contribution to the field of risk assessment, and b) overall quality of writing.

We congratulate the authors of the selected Papers of Year 2010. Well done!

Barry L. Johnson and José Luis Domingo

Editors in Chief

HERA PAPERS OF YEAR 2010

Ecological Risk Assessment Paper of Year 2010

Mark A. Harwell, John H. Gentile, Charles B. Johnson, David L. Garshelis, and Keith R. Parker. A Quantitative Ecological Risk Assessment of the Toxicological Risks from Exxon Valdez Subsurface Oil Residues to Sea Otters at Northern Knight Island, Prince William Sound, Alaska. HERA 16(4):727–76. “A very well-planned and executed study that provided scientifically credible information on an issue of political and economic importance.” (HERA Senior Editor).

Human Health Risk Assessment Paper of Year 2010

Niall O’Brien and Enda Cummins. Nano-Scale Pollutants: Fate in Irish Surface and Drinking Water Regulatory Systems. HERA 16(4): 847–872. “This paper evaluates in great detail the presence and potential health significance of several nanocomponents present in general commerce. Aside from intense interest in the issue of nanomaterials in the scientific and popular press, this study is an excellent example of complete treatment of a question from detailed historical background through assessment of practical risk” (HERA Senior Editor).

Risk Communication/Perception Paper of Year 2010

Simone Dohle, Carmen Keller, and Michael Siegrist. Conjoint Measurement of Base Station Siting Preferences HERA 16(4):325–836. “A valuable contribution to a better understanding of how the public makes decisions about a contemporary challenge, placement of technology within a community.” (HERA Senior Editor)

Risk Management Paper of Year 2010

David L. Olson and Desheng Dash Wu. Earthquakes and Risk Management in China. HERA 16(3):476–93. “In conjunction with broader use of information system technology, it may be possible to improve preparedness and response to earthquakes.” (HERA Editorial Board member)
