Jointly submitted and approved by the National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSO), the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP), and the Air Medical Physician Association (AMPA).
EMS Medical Directors are physicians who operate under codes of conduct which recognize their responsibility to the public, EMS practitioners, and to health care systems. The National Association of State EMS Officials, the National Association of EMS Physicians, and the Air Medical Physician Association have jointly adopted the following Principles of honorable behavior by EMS Medical Directors.
EMS Medical Directors shall
Be dedicated to compassionate, competent, effective, and efficient care of their patients and the patients served by the practitioners and agencies whom they oversee, without discrimination, within the parameters of the EMS system, and utilizing evidence-based practice.
Seek continual improvement of the EMS profession, the EMS system, its practitioners, healthcare partners and care of public.
Promote and uphold the highest standards of honesty, professionalism, ethics, and collaboration free from improper influence or coercion, including avoidance of conflicts of interest, bias and self-referral, during review and oversight of EMS care, medical-legal consultation, or in any other venue.
Respect and seek to improve EMS system protocols, regulations, and relevant laws.
Protect the confidentiality and privacy of patients and practitioners within the requirements of law.
Develop and foster a culture of physical and mental health within themselves and the EMS practitioners whom they oversee, along with safety measures to protect the health of those around them.
