Racism and Homophobia in Cuba: A Historical and Contemporary Overview

Pages 26-34 | Published online: 28 Oct 2014

Abstract

Research indicates that the combined experiences of homophobia, heterosexism, and racism have an exponentially negative impact on the mental health and social functioning of Black LGBTQ people throughout the diaspora (Majied & Moss-Knight, 2012; Wheeler & Dodd, 2011; Williams, 2000). This article will provide an analysis of the oppressive paradigms that impact LGBTQ Black Cubans. There will be an overview of race and racism in Cuba as well as a discussion of the history of sexual orientation–based oppression in Cuba. Current challenges for Black LGBTQ Cubans as well as resources and implications for social work research, policy, education, and practice will also be discussed.
