Social Media Around the GLOBE

&
Pages 122-137 | Published online: 05 May 2014

Abstract

Building on the GLOBE study of cultural values, this article explores the impact of societal culture on organizational social media use. The analysis reported in this article is based on data collected from the Fortune Global 500 organizations regarding their use of six different types of external social media. The results of the analysis indicate that societal culture has to be considered an important factor for organizational social media use.

Notes

2. 1 The GLOBE study provides two sets of results for each cultural dimension: for “values” and for “practices.” The values refer to what members of a societal culture consider to be right, true, or appropriate. The practices refer to the extent to which the values are actually implemented in social institutions. Organizations might have reasons to act differently from cultural values due to other reasons at the organizational level (e.g., global competition). We considered that the values better represented the actual societal culture. Hence, we used the values. However, regression results for practices were nearly identical to the results for values.
