The Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the North American Actuarial Journal (NAAJ) announce the appointment of Montserrat Guillen Estany, PhD, MA, MSc, as the new chief editor of the North American Actuarial Journal, effective January 1, 2023. Professor Guillen Estany is a distinguished scholar with an impressive international publishing record, including four books, 40 chapters in books, and over 230 articles. She is a full professor in the Department of Econometrics, Statistics, and Applied Economics and the ICREA Academia distinguished professor, the director of the Riskcenter of the University of Barcelona, and an honorary visiting professor in the Faculty of Actuarial Science and Insurance at City, University of London. Professor Guillen Estany also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Fundación MAPFRE, a non-profit institution created by the Spanish multinational insurer MAPFRE. The Board of Trustees is Fundación MAPFRE's highest governing body, with full powers of representation, decision-making, management, and execution.
The SOA and the NAAJ wish to express appreciation to the journal’s previous chief editor, Patrick L. Brockett, PhD, MA. Professor Brockett is the Gus S. Wortham Memorial Chair in Risk Management and Insurance at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also serves as a professor with joint appointments in the Departments of Information, Risk and Operations Management, Finance, and Mathematics, as the director of the Risk Management and Insurance Program, and as the director of the Center for Risk Management and Insurance. Professor Brockett served as the journal’s chief editor for nine years. He was integral to building the journal that we see today. Under his editorship, the NAAJ progressed to a top-level actuarial journal with a large international readership and authorship.
Issue Dedication
The North American Actuarial Journal Editorial Board dedicates this issue of the journal to Professor Ken Seng Tan, ASA, CERA, MMath, PhD, who sadly and unexpectedly passed away on January 1, 2023. An Editorial Dedication will be published in issue 2 this year.
