Message from the Technical Editor-in-Chief

Another successful year, thanks to our outstanding peer reviewers

Where would we be without peer reviewers? Year after year, with dedication and commitment to the scientific community, hundreds of volunteer peer reviewers help us ensure the high quality and integrity of the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association (JA&WMA). The peer reviewers included in this edition of JA&WMA have provided objective and constructive comments on the manuscripts that were published in 2012. In keeping with JA&WMA’s longstanding tradition, this issue is dedicated to those peer reviewers. We thank all of you for your valuable time and effort in this cause, and look forward to adding to this list over the coming year.

In addition to the contributions from peer reviewers, a dedicated group of eminently qualified Associate Editors continues to play a vital role in the day-to-day operations of JA&WMA. Their breadth of expertise provides more complete coverage in the science of air and waste management, bringing new diligence to the manuscript review and selection process. The Associate Editors are also key representatives of JA&WMA in their respective countries and disciplines, seeking out new topics of interest and potential special issues. This past year, we welcomed Dr. Nicola Pirrone (CNR, Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Italy) to the group of Associate Editors. JA&WMA’s Associate Editors are listed on the inside cover page of each issue.

I am pleased to report that A&WMA will be giving out two new awards this year—technical paper of the year and reviewer of the year—which will be presented at its Annual Conference & Exhibition in Chicago. The Associate Editors and the Technical Editor-in-Chief will be involved with the selection process for these two awards. In addition, A&WMA will be instituting a prestigious new award, named after Dr. Arthur C. Stern, former President of the Association and eminent scholar in the air pollution field, for those who have greatly advanced the air and waste management field through their publications in JA&WMA. A selection committee consisting of experts drawn from industry, government, and academia will work with the Technical Editor-in-Chief in selecting individuals who have contributed substantially to our field through JA&WMA. Guidelines for nominations for the Arthur C. Stern Award are posted on the A&WMA Web site, www.awma.org.

Since January 2012, JA&WMA has been published by Taylor & Francis, an internationally recognized leader in the publication of environmental engineering and science journals. This partnership combines the deep tradition of excellence for which JA&WMA, one of the oldest continuously published, peer-reviewed, technical environmental journals in the world, is known, with the global reach and technological capabilities of Taylor & Francis. What does all of this mean for members, subscribers, authors, and reviewers? Members and subscribers now have improved online access to JA&WMA, as well access to JA&WMA archives dating back to 1951 that are fully searchable online and in .html format. In addition, members and subscribers have access to additional scientific journals and content published by Taylor & Francis. JA&WMA continues to post pre-published versions of accepted papers online, allowing researchers access to the most up-to-date peer-reviewed information, and last year launched its first virtual issue, containing a grouping of papers on PM2.5 monitoring. JA&WMA will continue to publish virtual issues, as well as special issues, on topics of particular interest to the scientific and policy-making community. We encourage you to visit JA&WMA online at www.tandfonline.com/uawm.
