Geology of the Eskilstuna SW and SE map-sheets, south central Sweden: Interpretation of aeromagnetic maps

Pages 159-163 | Received 15 Jun 1986, Published online: 06 Jan 2010

Abstract

A simplified aeromagnetic interpretation map of the Eskilstuna SW and SE map-sheets, south central Sweden, is presented. Two types of anomaly pattern are observed: banded and dyke-like patterns. It is inferred that the banded anomaly pattern corresponds to the gneissic pre-dyke basement, which consists of two units: (a) a volcanic-sedimentary complex (the so-called Leptite formation) with intermediate to high magnetization level; (b) a sedimentary complex with low magnetization level. Dykes of mafic rocks are clearly defined on aeromagnetic maps. On a regional scale the dykes trend in E-W, N-S and NNW-SSE directions. The investigated area is characterized by a high concentration of E-W dykes. A pattern of mutually perpendicular NW- and NE-trending faults is also a prominent structural feature of the area.
