Abstract

Cenomanian to Upper Campanian belemnite faunas of the Båstad Basin, Halland County, southern Sweden are described. The faunas include five species and one group: the Cenomanian Actinocamax ex gr. primus Arkhangelsky/plenus(Blainville) from a well excavation in Båstad; an assemblage from Gräsryd consisting of A. verus Miller, Gonioteuthis sp., possibly G. westfalicagranulata (Stolley), and Belemnitella propinqua (Moberg), which is probably upper Middle Santonian; and B. mucronata (Schlotheim) and B. aff. B. langei Jeletzky from Malen, which are probably middle Upper Campanian. B. mucronata is recorded from Gropemöllan, and the sediments here are probably middle Upper Campanian. Upper Campanian and Maastrichtian taxa of Belemnitella are discussed, and it is shown that many of these are poorly understood and that the species concept differs from one author to another. The localities are placed in the international stratigraphic framework on the basis of the belemnite faunas. The thickness of the Cretaceous sedimentary deposits of the Båstad Basin is about 125 m. Calcarenites and glauconitic marls occur close to the Hallandsåsen Horst. Northwards the lithology changes to marls and sandstones. The oldest Cretaceous rocks are from the Albian.
