Interaction between ommatidia in the landing reaction of flesh-flies (Calliphoridae)

Abstract

Our research concerns variations in sensitivity to movement in different areas of the compound eye in Calliphora after light adaptation. The aim was to check whether illumination of the upper and lower ommatidia affects the sensitivity of the frontal ommatidia to movement, as if, in the adaptation process, there is an interaction between the ommatidia.

The threshold velocity for the landing reaction was measured.

Partial illumination of the compound eye was obtained through a sheaf of glass fibres.

The results support the hypothesis that the ommatidia interact in the adaptation process to variations in light intensity.
