ABSTRACT
Festuca imperatrix Catonica sp. nov. (sect Festuca = sect intravaginales Hackel) and Festuca alpina subsp. riverae Chas, Kerguélen & Plonka (new record) from the Gran Sasso massif are reported. F. imperatrix typically grows on gruond dry hillocks of the moraine of quaternary glaciers. F. alpina subsp. riverae (alpina group) is a very rare subspecies of the rocky limestone vegetation in the alpine belt of the southern Alps, which had not been recorded in the central Apennines previously. Both taxa are important for the characterization of the subalpine and alpine belt grassland and rocky vegetation. A description of the auto- and synecology of these fescue species by phytosociological and pedological approaches is given, together with the phytosociological characterization of their habitats.
