Abstract

Critical species inventories provide primary biodiversity data crucial for biogeographical, ecological, and conservation studies. After six years, a second update to the inventory of the vascular flora native to Italy is presented. It provides details on the occurrence at regional level and, for the first time, floristic data for San Marino. The checklist includes 8,241 species and subspecies, distributed in 1,111 genera and 153 families; 23 taxa are lycophytes, 108 ferns and fern allies, 30 gymnosperms, and 8,080 angiosperms. The species/subspecies endemic to Italy are 1,702, grouped in 71 families and 312 genera. The taxa currently occurring in Italy are 7,591, while 545 taxa have not been confirmed in recent times, 94 are doubtfully occurring in the country, 11 are data deficient, and 236 are reported by mistake and to be excluded at national level. Out of the 545 not confirmed taxa, 28 are considered extinct or possibly extinct.

Introduction

Critical species inventories provide primary biodiversity data crucial for botanical research, plant conservation and the sustainable use of plant resources (Peruzzi Citation2018a; Borsch et al. Citation2020). Concerning vascular flora, checklists are continuously being published at global (Borsch et al. Citation2020; Govaerts et al. Citation2021; Schellenberger Costa et al. Citation2023), continental (Wang et al. Citation2023), national (Barina et al. Citation2018; Niketić et al. Citation2018; Kurtto et al. Citation2019; Giblin Citation2020; Baasanmunkh et al. Citation2022; Gosline et al. Citation2023; Sosa et al. Citation2023), up to local (e.g. Beierkuhnlein et al. Citation2021) levels. Checklists at national level, in particular, are useful tools and need periodical updates (e.g. Hand et al. Citation2019; Odorico et al. Citation2022) to follow the progress in scientific knowledge.

The publication of the checklist of the Italian vascular flora (Conti et al. Citation2005) was the first opportunity in which the members of the Working Group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution of the Italian Botanical Society established an effective network of scientific collaborations (Peruzzi Citation2018a). Such a collaborative approach, led in 2018 to the publication of two separate inventories: an updated checklist of the vascular flora native to Italy (Bartolucci et al. Citation2018a), and an updated checklist of the vascular flora alien to Italy (Galasso et al. Citation2018).

Six years after the publication of the checklist of the vascular flora native to Italy (Bartolucci et al. Citation2018a), time has come for a second update, on the basis of new floristic, systematic and taxonomic knowledge available in the meantime. After the publication of the checklists in 2018, a survey of the accepted names described from Italy was completed (Peruzzi et al. Citation2019). The data were organized into the information system “FlorItaly - Portal to the Flora of Italy” (Martellos et al. Citation2020), which is accessible online at the address https://dryades.units.it/floritaly/. FlorItaly is updated every six months with data coming from the series “Notulae to the Italian native vascular Flora” (see also Bartolucci et al. Citation2021, 2023).

The aim of this study is to provide an updated inventory of the native vascular flora of Italy (including the enclave Republic of San Marino), to serve as a taxonomic and nomenclatural basis for botanical research, and to promote new floristic investigations and biosystematic studies.

Materials and methods

The systematic order and taxonomic circumscription of the families follow the classification proposed by PPG I (Citation2016) for ferns and fern allies, by Christenhusz et al. (Citation2011) for gymnosperms and by APG IV (Citation2016) for angiosperms, with the exception of Dipsacales (Reveal Citation2011), Caryophyllales (Hernández-Ledesma et al. Citation2015), Boraginales (Luebert et al. Citation2016), and Celastrales (Simmons et al. Citation2023). The disputed family Chenopodiaceae was included in Amaranthaceae based on the recent molecular study by Morales-Briones et al. (Citation2021).

Author citation of plant names was standardized according to IPNI (Citation2023). The checklist includes also apomictic taxa characterized by particularly high species inflation and taxonomic treatments subjected to considerable variation between authors. This is the case of the following genera: Alchemilla L. and Rubus L. (Rosaceae), Hieracium L., Pilosella Hill, and Taraxacum F.H.Wigg. (Asteraceae), and Ranunculus auricomus group (Ranunculaceae). Taxa at varietal rank and hybrids were not considered.

The distribution of specific and subspecific taxa at regional scale was updated based on new data published in the period 2018–2023 in the series “Notulae to the Italian native vascular Flora” (e.g. Bartolucci et al. Citation2023a, Citation2023b), on the second edition of “Flora d’Italia” (Pignatti et al. Citation2017a, Citation2017b, Citation2018, Citation2019), and on floristic contributions, taxonomic reviews, regional inventories (e.g. Arrigoni Citation2016, Citation2017, Citation2018a, Citation2018b, Citation2019a, Citation2019b, Citation2020, Citation2021a, Citation2021b; Lucchese Citation2018; Argenti et al. Citation2019; Prosser et al. Citation2019; Martini et al. Citation2023).

The “Italian endemic” status, following Peruzzi et al. (Citation2014a), was attributed to those taxa occurring only in Italy (including San Marino), or in Italy and Corsica (France), or in Italy and Malta.

The distribution data (see Appendix S1) is provided for each of the 20 administrative regions of Italy and for San Marino, and is coded as follows (see also Bartolucci et al. Citation2018a): VDA (Valle d’Aosta), PIE (Piemonte), LOM (Lombardia), TAA (Trentino-Alto Adige), VEN (Veneto), FVG (Friuli Venezia Giulia), LIG (Liguria), EMR (Emilia-Romagna), TOS (Toscana), MAR (Marche), UMB (Umbria), LAZ (Lazio), ABR (Abruzzo), MOL (Molise), PUG (Puglia), CAM (Campania), BAS (Basilicata), CAL (Calabria), SIC (Sicilia), SAR (Sardegna), RSM (San Marino). The Vatican City State was not considered. When the information concerning the distribution of a given subspecies for a region is missing, only the occurrence at species level was reported (Appendix S1).

For each Italian administrative region and for San Marino, the occurrence status of each taxon is provided by using the following categories (Appendix S1):

  • Occurring: “P”;

  • Doubtfully occurring: “D”;

  • No longer recorded (reliable historical record): “NC”;

  • Extinct or possibly extinct: “EX”;

  • Recorded by mistake: “NP”;

  • Alien at local level (of a species otherwise native at national level): “A” [“CAS” (Casual), “NAT” (Naturalized), “INV” (Invasive)].

Other abbreviations or symbols used in the list before the species/subspecies name are as follows:

  • Italian endemic: “E”;

  • Cryptogenic: “C” i.e. a doubtfully native taxon, whose origin of occurrence in Italy is unknown;

  • Taxonomically doubtful: “T”;

  • Data deficient at national level: “DD.”

Within each major taxonomic group, the families are alphabetically ordered. The same for genera within families, and for species and subspecies within genera. The taxa doubtfully occurring in Italy are indicated in italics only, and not in bold italics. Taxonomic references concerning genera are added below the families. Notes on taxonomy, nomenclature and distribution are included in the list below each taxon. The lists of synonyms, misapplied and included names (Appendix S2), along with the list of taxa to be excluded at national level (Appendix S3) are available as supplementary material.

Discussion

The native flora of Italy includes 8,241 specific and subspecific taxa, while those endemic to Italy are 1,702, i.e. 46 more and 6 less respectively than previously published (Bartolucci et al. Citation2018a). These different figures are due to a balance between new taxa descriptions, new records, synonymizations, updates in name applications, and changes of status (alien vs. native). These values confirm Italy as the European country having the highest number of vascular plant taxa in Europe (Bartolucci et al. Citation2018a), albeit a proper Species-Area Relationship at European level should be carried out, to compare floristic richness among countries (for a recent study focused on Italy, see D’Antraccoli et al. Citation2024).

It should be noted that 1,145 taxa (of which 254 Italian endemics) are treated as “subspecies” of taxonomically difficult apomict genera as Hieracium and Pilosella (Asteraceae), which still lack a modern and biologically sound integrative taxonomic revision. Also concerning the genus Ophrys (Orchidaceae), the taxonomy is very disputed and ranges between a minimum of 9 and a maximum of ca. 400 species worldwide (Bateman and Rudall Citation2023). The current picture in Italy sees 97 taxa (of which 54 Italian endemics), and the taxa circumscription adopted apparently lies between two extreme lumping vs. splitting approaches.

Although in recent years field explorations, regional floras and taxonomic reviews regarding the Italian flora have been increasingly published (Peruzzi Citation2018a, see also Introduction), for many taxa the distribution data are lacking and/or show significant gaps of knowledge. In fact, 545 taxa have not been confirmed in recent times, 94 are doubtfully occurring in Italy, 11 are data deficient and 474 are taxonomically doubtful. There is clearly a need for further field and systematic investigations to fill these gaps.

Accordingly, the number of taxa reported here is certainly not final, and the taxonomic circumscription of some critical taxa will require further in-depth analyses (Peruzzi Citation2023). A sound floristic and systematic knowledge is also crucial for the improvement of conservation priorities, given that in the National Red List many Data Deficient (DD) species occur (Orsenigo et al. Citation2021). However, the critical update achieved so far will greatly contribute to global progresses in knowledge of vascular plant systematics (Borsch et al. Citation2020; Govaerts et al. Citation2021).Checklist of the Italian native vascular flora
