Abstract

Uptake and incorporation of phosphate, sulphate and uracil by ripening castor bean seeds. — The incorporation of labelled metabolites such as phosphate, sulphate and uracil into the different organic fractions in castor bean seeds at various development stages has been investigated. The aim of the study was an attempt to discriminate between reversible inactivation and irreversible degradation as major facts responsible for the decrease of physiologycal activity during ripening.

The results can be summarized as follows:

  1. phosphate and sulphate incorporation into organic fractions by fruits left on plant as well as isolated decreases with the progress of ripening.

  2. when phosphate or uracil are supplied to endosperm isolated from seeds at various ripening stages and incubated in water, the rate of incorporation which is initially lower in the more dehydrated endosperms, rapidly tend to be equal for all endosperms. These results are interpreted as indicating that ripening involves a general inactivation of all metabolic activities. The decrease of metabolic activity seems to involve processes which are rapidly reversible by water imbibition, at least as far as some aspects of phosphate and uracil metabolism are concerned.
