Border crossing. A service-learning approach based on transformative learning and cultural-historical psychology (Cruzando la frontera. Una aproximación al aprendizaje servicio desde el aprendizaje transformativo y la psicología histórico-cultural)

ABSTRACT

This article presents an empirical study on the notion of border crossing within participation in university service learning (SL) programmes. Taking transformative learning and the cultural-historical approach as the conceptual referents, we analyse the field notes of students in their SL projects in Barcelona and Seville, geared at educational interventions with children from settings at risk of social exclusion. After categorizing the notes of 28 students, we focus on the references to otherness and conduct an in-depth analysis of the narratives of two students elicited by their active participation in the setting. Both cases reveal the importance of the interactive and emotional components of learning in the development of their own identity.

RESUMEN

En este artículo se presenta un estudio empírico sobre la noción Cruce de Fronteras en el marco de la participación en programas de Aprendizaje Servicio universitario (ApS). Tomando como refe-rentes conceptuales el Aprendizaje Transformativo y el enfoque histórico-cultural, se analizan los diarios de campo de estudiantes en sendos proyectos en Barcelona y Sevilla, orientados a la intervención educativa con niños y niñas pertenecientes a contextos en riesgo de exclusión social. Tras la categorización de los diarios correspondientes a 28 estudiantes, se focaliza en las referencias a la alteridad y se analizan en profundidad las narraciones de dos estudiantes en las que se encuentran diferentes trayectorias donde se produce un cruce de fronteras elicitado por su participación activa en el escenario, mostrando en ambos casos la relevancia de los componentes interactivos y emocionales del aprendizaje en su propio desarrollo identitario.

2. Las 3,000’ is a popular and well-known name of one of the neighbourhoods within the Polígono Sur in the city of Seville. It comes from the number of homes that the neighbourhood originally had (the 3,000 homes). This name is also used the most in the media when associating the neighbourhood as a whole to a high degree of marginality and cases of criminality.

3. ‘Futbolito’ is a diminutive of ‘fútbol’ (football) written by the student phonetically in the way it is pronounced by Roma children, ‘furbolito’; meanwhile, ‘pañuelito’, a diminutive of ‘pañuelo’, and ‘tanga’ are games that the children commonly play during recess.
