Diasporic tourism and investment in Suriname

Pages 142-154 | Published online: 16 Nov 2011

Abstract

Suriname has one of the largest diasporic economies in the Caribbean given the relative impact of remittances, brain drain and other associated flows. The bulk of the literature and debate on the diasporic economy focuses on these issues. In this regard, the diasporic tourism component is largely unmapped and represents a new area of migration as well as tourism research. The article documents the nature and scope of diasporic tourism and investment in Suriname and assesses the potential to further capitalize on this emigrant driven tourism. The article looks specifically at the flow of tourists between Suriname and global cities in the Netherlands (i.e. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague), the country which accounts for the largest share of the Surinamese diaspora. The findings indicate that diasporic tourism is a dynamic element of the wider economy in terms of the synergistic relationship to other sectors such as transportation, telecommunications and health.

This argument is built on Stuart Hall's Citation(1991) assertion that the Caribbean transnational community is “twice-diasporized”. It takes it further to show that some elements of the Caribbean diaspora have options to relocate to the original homelands.
