Acta Botanica: Botany Letters, entre continuité historique et renouvellement
L’éditeur en chef d’Acta Botanica Gallica, bien connu des lecteurs et des auteurs de notre revue, Bruno de Foucault, après plus de quinze ans dans cette tâche exigeante, a décidé de prendre sa retraite pour se consacrer à nouveau pleinement à des activités de terrain et jouir d’un repos amplement mérité. Qu’il soit ici remercié chaleureusement de son dévouement entièrement bénévole pour maintenir et développer cette revue botanique généraliste à laquelle il a apporté ses compétences, son énergie et son temps, contribuant, par là même à l’impact actuel. B. de Foucault conservera un lien avec Acta Botanica Gallica puisqu’il a bien voulu rejoindre le comité éditorial dans lequel il apportera son expertise de floriste et de phytosociologue, ainsi que sa large expérience de la publication scientifique. L’encadré 1 présente l’ensemble des 24 nouveaux éditeurs d’Acta Botanica Gallica; bienvenue à eux tous et merci à eux par avance d’avoir accepté d’accompagner le développement de notre revue.
À l’occasion de cette passation de témoins, le conseil de la Société botanique de France a souhaité un partenariat éditorial avec un éditeur scientifique de qualité pour renforcer la revue, tant dans sa diffusion que dans son accessibilité et son professionnalisme. Nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer qu’Acta Botanica Gallica à partir du 1er janvier rejoint les revues por_tées par Taylor & Francis, avec le sous-titre Botany Letters. Acta Botanica Gallica : Botany Letters, dans un nouveau format et avec une nouvelle couverture, sera dorénavant disponible en format papier et numérique. Progressivement, les articles anciens seront numérisés et, par ce biais, tous les articles seront disponibles gratuitement au bout de cinq ans. Ainsi l’a souhaité le conseil de la Société, car notre vocation est, avant tout, l’échange de la connaissance scientifique, qui ne saurait se concevoir sans un accès à Internet, ni sans un minimum de gratuité.
Ce changement a été aussi l’occasion de changements dans le comité éditorial : sa composition témoigne du renouvellement de notre ligne éditoriale qui s’élargit tout en restant centrée sur le végétal (encadré 2) et sur la publication en anglais et en français. Les consignes aux auteurs marquent une évolution du format, avec en particulier des résumés en anglais rallongés pour les articles en français. Nous offrons plusieurs formats d’articles (encadré 3), destinés à promouvoir les débats et les échanges d’idées. Ces changements ont été conçus pour réorienter le contenu d’Acta Botanica Gallica : Botany Letters afin de mieux refléter le caractère extrêmement diversifié de notre discipline et des centres d’intérêt de nos lecteurs, et d’accroître la diffusion et la notoriété de la revue. La ligne générale ouvre sur une approche élargie du végétal, conçu comme l’ensemble des organismes chlorophylliens et de leurs propriétés. Compte tenu de la diversité des champs couverts, les contenus varieront d’un fascicule à l’autre en fonction des articles soumis, mais le nouveau comité éditorial s’efforcera d’assurer progressivement un équilibre entre les différentes disciplines. Les articles interdisciplinaires seront vivement encouragés.
La nouvelle équipe s’engage à mettre en œuvre progressivement, après la période de transition, des délais courts pour la révision, l’acceptation et la publication, avec la possibilité de publication en ligne dès la mise en forme de l’article effectuée (online first), la mise en ligne de suppléments d’information complétant les articles publiés et la communication de l’article au format pdf aux auteurs. La mise à disposition d’une plateforme électronique, sous ScholarOne, de soumission par Taylor & Francis facilitera et accélérera la procédure de soumission des articles.
Concrètement, cette nouvelle politique ne commencera à prendre ses pleins effets que progressivement. En effet, ce numéro a été préparé avant la mise en œuvre de l’ensemble de ces changements. Le numéro 159(2) sera consacré aux actes du colloque “Biodiversity Management and Preservation”. Ce colloque qui se tient régulièrement depuis 2007 sous les auspices de l’université de Jaén (Espagne), réunit des contributions de chercheurs français, espagnols, italiens et portugais impliqués dans la gestion et la préservation de la biodiversité. De ce fait, les changements ne commenceront à prendre leur plein effet qu’à partir des numéros 159(3) and (4).
Le comité éditorial et le conseil de la Société botanique de France comptent sur votre soutien en tant qu’abonné, mais également en votre qualité d’auteur potentiel, dans cette période de transition. Ces changements visent à assurer à notre revue un avenir digne de son passé, lui-même revitalisé : avec le numéro 159, s’amorce la cent cinquante–neuvième année de publication de la Société botanique de France…
Acta Botanica: Botany Letters, historical continuity and renewal
Bruno de Foucault, the chief editor of Acta Botanica Gallica, well known of both authors and readers of our journal, after more than fifteen years of dedication to this demanding task, has decided to retire and to devote himself to field research and a well deserved rest. We want to warmly thank him here for all these years devoted to maintain and develop this generalist botany journal. He brought all his competencies, energy and time to contribute to the current impact. Bruno de Foucault will, however, maintain a link to Acta Botanica Gallica as he has agreed to serve as an editor and to input his floristic and phytosociology expertise, as well as his thorough experience of scientific edition. Box 1 presents the Editorial Board of Acta Botanica Gallica with its 24 new editors. We welcome each one of them and wish to thank them for accepting to support the development of our journal.
A departure goes always with regrets, but it is also a time for change with enticing new opportunities. The council of the Société botanique de France has decided this was the right time to outsource and search for an editorial partnership with a scientific editor that would bring in increased professionalism and expertise to reinforce the journal and boost its accessibility and diffusion. We are pleased to announce that as of 1st January, Acta Botanica Gallica will integrate the portfolio of scientific publications of Taylor & Francis. Acta Botanica Gallica with the new subtitle Botany Letters, a new format and a new cover design, will as of 2012 be available both under a printed and an electronic format. Progressively, the contents of former issues will be digitalised by our society and Taylor & Francis and made available online under a pay-per-view system and free of charge for the papers of more than 5 years. The Council of the Société botanique de France deeply values this, since we believe our “raison d’être” as a professional society is to contribute to the exchange of scientific knowledge.
This change has also entailed a renewal of the Editorial Board; its composition testifies the renewal of the editorial aims and scope that have been broadened whilst remaining focused on plants (see box 2), with articles both in English and in French. The instructions to authors (available on the website) entail a format evolution, with abstracts in English increased in length for the papers written in French. We offer several formats of articles (see box 3), aiming at promoting debates and idea exchanges. These changes have been devised to move the contents of Acta Botanica Gallica: Botany Letters in order to best reflect the extreme diversity of our field and of our readers’ interests, and to increase the audience of our journal. The “Aims and Scope” open towards an enlarged approach of plants, understood as all chlorophyllous organisms and their properties. Due to the diversity of the fields covered, the contents may and will vary from one issue to the other, but the Editorial Board will strive to ensure progressively a balance between the different disciplines over a year. Multidisciplinary contributions will, in that regard, be strongly encouraged.
The new team is committed to ensure progressively, after a necessary transition period, short delays for revision, acceptation and publication of submitted articles. Authors will also enjoy the possibility offered by Taylor & Francis of online first publication for revised articles, as well as the possibility to publish online supplementary information; finally, they will receive a free copy and the pdf file of their article. An electronic platform of submission provided by Taylor & Francis, under ScholarOne, will facilitate and speed the overall submission process.
Obviously, all these changes will take some time to deploy. In this regard, this first issue of 2012 had been prepared before the new momentum and does not yet reflect entirely the expected changes. The 159(2) fascicule will be a special issue carrying the acts of the “Biodiversity Management and Preservation” Symposium held under the auspices of the University of Jaén (Spain). Launched in 2007, these conferences have become a meeting point for young and senior researchers, with contributions from prestigious experts from universities and research centres in Spain, France, Italy and Portugal. Thus, the changes laid above will actually start to take their full effect in issues 159(3) and (4).
We trust you will endorse these new directions and continue to support the journal, as customers and would-be authors, in this transition. Together, with the joint commitment of the new Editorial Board and the expertise of Taylor & Francis, we believe Acta Botanica Gallica: Botany Letters will make its way to a bright future, and continue the rich history of 159 years of publication by the Société botanique de France…
