ABSTRACT

Free radical scavenging activity of total methanol extracts from 28 samples of 22 cultivated medicinal plants was quantitatively determined using a DPPPH assay. Among tested species, Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim., Mentha spicata L., Tanacetum parthenium L., Tanacetum balsamita L. (camphored type), Satureja pilosa Velen., Sideritis scardica L., Chrysanthemum indicum L. (yellow and rose type), exhibited strong activities and their IC50 values for DPPH radicals were 9.04, 20,19, 39, 23, 42.73, 53.12, 59.44, 87.64 μg/ml respectively. The examined extracts were screened for their flavonoid profiles. Twenty two flavonoid aglycones and glycosides were identified by TLC analysis. The connection flavonoids—antioxidant activity is briefly discussed.
