Providing Mental Health Support for Protection Visa Applicants in Australian Immigration Detention: Partnering Mental Health Support and Migration Law Consultation

Pages 460-465 | Published online: 15 Feb 2011

Abstract

This article revisits concepts first published by the author in 2004 at a time when people seeking asylum in Australia were assessed for the granting of a Temporary Protection Visa. Under Australian law, the asylum seekers now have their claims for Protection assessed offshore on Christmas Island. This article calls for the structure of individual mental health support to be built around the processes of seeking protection and coping with rejections and setbacks during the processes attendant upon applications for refugee status. The author contends that the function of supportive mental health counselling during migration lawyer consultation has the potential to help Protection Visa applicants cope with the processes and help to build needed resilience for the potential for rejection, fear, frustration and disappointment.
