Pigskins and publications revisited

Abstract

Using a sample of US universities, Shugart et al. (Atlantic Economic Journal, 14, pp. 45–50, 1986) reported a regression model estimation that the winning percentage of a football team was inversely related to the average number of pages published in top economics journals by an economics department faculty. To re-examine this finding, a similar empirical model was applied to more recent data and this investigation found that the football winning percentage has no statistically significant impact on the per capita number of pages published in top economics journals.

Notes

The football computer conference rankings of Jeff Sagarin confirm that these conferences are usually ranked at the top. See http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin-acrchive.htm.

The faculty salary data is drawn from The Chronicle of Higher Education web site at http://chronicle.com/stats/aau/2003. The source of the independent variables is US New America's Best Colleges, 1991–1992.
