Notes
1Given that the SPCN follows the N2pc, an earlier onset of the former means a greater overlap with the latter. In this situation, the SPCN is thus superimposed on the greater negativity of the N2pc, modulating its amplitude. In order to minimize the variability caused by differences in N2pc amplitude at the onset of the SPCN, we did not use a fixed amplitude criterion to measure the SPCN latency, as usually done, but instead we measured the time at which the SPCN, in each N–1 waveform, reached half of its maximum (peak amplitude) minus minimum (the junction between N2pc and SPCN) amplitude. A 10-Hz low-pass filter was applied on the waveforms prior to the jackknife analyses, and the SPCN onsets of each participant in each condition was recovered from the jackknife values.
