Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the link between leadership types and the entrepreneurial behaviour of health care providers. In particular, the focus is on whether and to what extent the relationship between transformational and transactional leadership and the attitudes towards collective entrepreneurship is affected by mediator variables. A quantitative approach was adopted, based on a questionnaire administered to a representative sample of nurses in a Local Health Unit in Portugal. In order to assess the impact of the potential mediator variables, this study uses a series of multiple linear regressionsin order to provide the tests of Baron and Kenney’s ([1986]. “The Moderator–Mediator Variable Distinction in Social Psychological Research: Conceptual, Strategic, and Statistical Considerations.” Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 51 (6): 1173–1182.) mediation model. The outcomes reveal that transformational leadership is highly relevant when it comes to promoting collective entrepreneurship. Commitment and interpersonal communication act as mediators between transformational leadership and nurses’ engagement in relation to entrepreneurial activities. This research represents a contribution in academic terms, as it explores mediating variables in the complex and under-researched relationship between leadership and collective entrepreneurship.
