Michael Herzfeld
Michael Herzfeld is the Ernest E. Monrad Professor of the Social Sciences in the Department of Anthropology, Harvard University. He also holds visiting appointments at the University of Leiden and Shanghai International Studies University and is a Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne; he also serves as Senior Advisor on Critical Heritage Studies to the International Institute for Asian Studies, Leiden. Author of eleven books (mostly recently Siege of the Spirits: Community and Polity in Bangkok [Chicago]) and Cultural Intimacy: Social Poetics and the Real Life of Societies, Institutions, and States [Routledge], both 2016), and producer of two ethnographic films about Rome (with Berkeley Media LLC), he has conducted extensive field research in Greece, Italy, and Thailand.
