Territoriality and power in the health professions

Pages 97-107 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Notes

1. Throughout this document, the terms medicine and nursing will be variously used in one or another of their several meanings – as professions, as disciplines, as organizations, as functions, and as enterprises. Occasionally, the term medicine (as enterprise) may include both medicine and nursing, without any implication of superiority or sovereignty. Similarly, the paucity of specific references to nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and physician's assistants should not be interpreted as in any way denigrating or discounting these important partners in health care. It is hoped that in most cases, the meaning will be clear from the discussion.
