1. The papers in this special issue both reflect and extend the debates fostered by the conference of the same name that took place at the Scottish Trades Union Congress and Glasgow University in March 2012. This brought together academics, activists, trades unionists, students and community activists. We thank all those who took place in making the conference a space of vibrant discussion and engagement.
