The evolution of psychotherapy in Western Europe

Abstract

In his address to the 10th EAP Congress in Moscow in 2001, Serge Ginger ¹ describes the evolution of psychotherapy in Europe, at first dominated by developments in psychoanalysis, but since the late sixties increasingly swinging towards both ‘New Humanistic Existential Therapies’, and others such as Cognitive – Behavioural and HypnoPsychotherapy-based and Systemic approaches. He ends with remarks about the way the need still grossly outruns supply in the provision of Psychotherapy in Europe.
