ABSTRACT
Following the devastating result of the May 2015 general election in the UK, the Institute for the Art and Practice of Dissent at Home organised ‘Compassion is dissent: Manifesto Slam’. It put out an open call for participants, asking them to bring a three-minute manifesto as means of admission to the event. Here, the Institute showcases three manifestos and also presents the manifesto developed in response to a commission from the Live Art Development Agency for Through the Looking Glass Art Festival in St Helens in 2015.

The Institute for the Art and Practice of Dissent at Home are a family of two adults Gary Anderson and Lena Šimić and their four children Neal, Gabriel, Sid and James. They have been running an art activist initiative in their family home in Liverpool (UK) since 2007. They are funded by 10% of all income that comes through the family.
The Institute for the Art and Practice of Dissent at Home is a long-term experiment in art-activism based in the family home and run by Gary Anderson and Lena Šimić along with their four boys Neal, Gabriel, Sid and James. Its budget is drawn from 10% of all members’ earnings including senior lectureships in Drama at Liverpool Hope University and Edge Hill University respectively. Anderson and Šimić are also co-founders of the Family Activist Network and their latest publication is 4 Boys [for Beuys] (IAPDH, 2016). The Institute are currently editing a special issue of Performance Research (Vol 23. 1) On Children (2018) together with Dr Adele Senior.
