ABSTRACT
This article describes the isolated nature of research in the field of Further Education and relates work at present in progress on women academic staff in the sector. The results of a survey of all FE institutions in the British Isles undertaken in 1993 are summarised in the form of a table of eight categories of academic staff. Comparisons are drawn with the work of other researchers. Details of the next stage of the research, which involves in‐depth interviews, are outlined and some preliminary themes identified from material collected at the pilot stage.
