Jealousy, envy, strife and discord in first clementFootnote*

Pages 173-179 | Published online: 20 Jun 2017

Abstract

This article investigates the role that the author of the First Epistle of Clement attributes to the rivalrous emotions in creating discord in the church at Corinth. Comparison with contemporary philosophers and moralists demonstrates that Clement employs conventional topics of conservative ideology in order to crush the revolt against the established presbyters.
