Notes
1. The essay was later republished in Parsons' collection of essays entitled Politics and social structure (Parsons Citation1969). Today, it is better known to students of Parsons' work through Politics and social structure, but attention to the context of its original publication is essential to a full understanding of the essay.
2. I am indebted to Elijah Anderson for the opportunity to read the manuscript of his forthcoming book, The cosmopolitan canopy.
