New Approach for Selection of Real Input Ground Motion Records for Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA)

Abstract

The main shortcoming of conventional incremental dynamic analysis is the questionable legitimacy of the simple amplitude scaling of records using the results of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. The present article proposes an alternative method that involves the assessment of the structural behavior of several single-degree-of-freedom systems whose usability at all or most levels of the intensity measure (IM) have been proven. The novel feature of the proposed method is that it enables selection of a set of records that introduce the least amount of bias into the structural response at all considered levels of the IM.
