ABSTRACT

A novel self-centering energy dissipation brace (SCEB) was developed to enhance the seismic resilience of bridges. In this paper, the replaceable SCEBs are installed between the double-column bent transversely and at the abutment longitudinally. Taking both the seismic safety and resilience into consideration, the seismic performance of bridges retrofitted by braces under near-fault (NF) pulse-like ground motions was evaluated by the probabilistic approach. Results show that the original and retrofitted bridges exhibit higher damage probabilities under NF pulse-like ground motions. The bridges retrofitted with SCEBs exhibit better seismic resilience than the bridges with buckling restrained braces when intensity measure increases.
