Liquid metal treatment

Influence of some metallurgical parameters on stream treated ductile iron

Pages 17-22 | Published online: 29 Nov 2016

Abstract

In this study, a stream treatment process of ductile iron was employed. The influences of metallurgical parameters on the microstructures and mechanical properties of ductile iron have been investigated. The metallurgical parameters include graphite nucleation potential of base iron, Mg-treatment process, inoculation process, and composition designing. It has been shown that the graphite nucleation potential plays an important role on solidification model of cast iron. The cooling curve analysis has been proven to be a useful tool to evaluate the nucleation potential of molten iron. Through controlling the treatment process, inoculation process, the high nodularity and high nodule count can be obtained. By a proper alloying element design, the different grades of ductile iron castings with desire microstructures and mechanical properrties can be obtained from same base iron.
