1. About the diagnostic categories and treatment recommendations of NICE the authors are unquestioning, for example, in regard to conditions such as ADHD and OCD. However, their broader argument against medication as the preferred treatment for mental illness implies a more critical attitude.
2. Layard in his book Happiness (Citation2005) argued against merely materialist measures of well-being, proposing that other aspects of life (e.g. relationships and satisfying work) matter more. However, this view does not inhibit his arguments here for the economic benefits of mental health treatments, which support the growth and competitiveness agendas of governments.
