Abstract
This article, written from the position of someone who has lived experience of therapy for ‘psychosis’ and an interest in participation, explores the degree to which qualitative research truly conveys the voice and perspective of research participants. By exploring five papers focused on diverse experiences of psychotherapy, from the perspective of clients and therapists, it draws out some of the tensions inherent in making interpretations and connections within research papers and the impact this may have on the quality of any conclusions drawn. Finally, it makes some suggestions for ways of meaningfully involving research participants in the process and argues for an ongoing dialogue to prevent our own assumptions and theoretical frameworks from obscuring the importance of this involvement to improve the quality of future research.
Der Artikel untersucht, inwieweit qualitative Forschung versucht ist, die Sprache und Perspektive von Forschungsteilnehmern wahrheitsgemäß zu transportieren. Hierzu werden fünf Artikel näher betrachtet, die sich mit der Praxis der Psychotherapie aus der Sicht von Klienten und Psychotherapeuten beschäftigen. Auf diesem Hintergrund werden schließlich immanente Spannungen innerhalb der Publikationen offengelegt, die durch das Interpretieren und in Beziehung setzen entstehen und so Auswirkungen auf die Qualität der Ergebnisse haben können. Abschließend werden Vorschläge dahingehend gemacht, wie sich Teilnehmer in einer aussagekräftigeren Art und Weise in den Forschungsprozess einbinden lassen. Darüber hinaus wird für ein permanentes Zwiegespräch mit den Forschungsteilnehmern optiert, um unsere eigenen Prämissen und den verwendeten theoretischen Rahmen davor zu bewahren, dem Moment der Beteiligung keine entscheidende Bedeutung beizumessen. Damit soll schlussendlich die Qualität zukünftiger Forschung verbessert werden.
Este artículo explora el grado en el cual la investigación cualitativa transmite la voz y la perspectiva de los participantes en ella.Explorando cinco artículos enfocados en diversas experiencias de psicoterapia, desde la perspecitva de los clientes y los terapeutas, pone de manifiesto algunas de las tensiones inherentes en dar interpretaciones y establecer conexiones en los artículos, acerca de las investigaciones y el impacto que ésto pueda tener en la calidad de las conclusiones. Finalmente, se hacen algunas sugerencias para una participación más significativa de los participantes en el proceso y propone un diálogo continuo para prevenir que nuestras propias suposiciones y marco teórico obscurezcan la importancia de esta participación para mejorar la calidad de las investigaciones futures.
Il presente contributo intende esplorare quanto la ricerca qualitativa sia davvero in grado di dare voce e di interpretare la prospettiva di coloro che partecipano alla ricerca. Attraverso l’esplorazione dei cinque contributi presenti in questo special issue, basati su diverse esperienze di psicoterapia, considerate sia dal punto di vista dei clienti che dei terapeuti, ci si focalizza su alcuni temi cruciali insiti nell’attività di interpretazione, sugli elementi di contatto presenti nei diversi contributi e sull'impatto che tutto ciò potrebbe avere sulla qualità delle conclusioni della ricerca. Infine, il contributo propone suggerimenti per l’attuazione di strategie di coinvolgimento partecipato nel processo di significazione della ricerca e sostiene la necessità di un dialogo continuo affinché sia evitata l’assunzione di ipotesi e di modelli teorici che potrebbero tacitare l'importanza di tale coinvolgimento, necessario per migliorare la qualità delle ricerche future.
Cet article explore dans quelle mesure la recherche qualitative fait réellement une place à la voix et aux perspectives des participants. L’exploration des cinq articles de ce numéro spécial qui décrivent différentes expériences de la psychothérapie, selon les perspectives des clients ainsi que celles des thérapeutes, permet de mettre l’accent sur les tensions inhérentes aux interprétations et connexions faites entre des articles de recherche et l’impact que cela peut avoir sur la qualité des conclusions tirées. Cet article fait également des suggestions quant à une implication plus significative des participants dans le processus de recherche. Enfin, il plaide en faveur d’un dialogue constant qui nous permettrait d’éviter que nos propres présuppositions et cadres théoriques viennent obscurcir l’importance de notre contribution à l’amélioration de la qualité de futures recherches.
Το παρόν άρθρο διερευνά το βαθμό στον οποίο η ποιοτική έρευνα αποδίδει πραγματικά τη φωνή και την οπτική των συμμετεχόντων στην έρευνα. Μέσα από τη διερεύνηση πέντε άρθρων που εστιάζουν σε διαφορετικές εμπειρίες της ψυχοθεραπείας, από τη σκοπιά των πελατών και των θεραπευτών, σε αυτή την εργασία αναδεικνύονται ορισμένα από τα σημεία έντασης στις ερμηνείες και στις συνδέσεις που γίνονται στις ερευνητικές μελέτες και οι επιπτώσεις που μπορεί αυτό να έχει για την ποιότητα των συμπερασμάτων που εξάγονται. Τέλος, αναφέρονται ορισμένες προτάσεις για τους τρόπους με τους οποίους θα μπορούσαν να εμπλακούν ουσιαστικά οι συμμετέχοντες στην ερευνητική διαδικασία και υποστηρίζεται ότι είναι σημαντικό να υπάρξει συνεχής διάλογος με στόχο να αποτραπεί η πιθανότητα οι δικές μας παραδοχές και θεωρητικά πλαίσια να επισκιάσουν τη σημασία της συμμετοχής αυτής για τη βελτίωση της ποιότητας της μελλοντικής έρευνας.
