Abstract
In this paper, I provide a published paper response to the papers in this special edition on the paranormal and psychotherapy articulated largely from my career as a parapsychologist. In the introduction I note the definitional differences between advocates and counter-advocates in terms of what might be ‘paranormal’, although I argue ultimately that definitional differences aside, the therapist’s relationship with the client’s unusual experiences is critical, taking a phenomenological stance which is echoed by at least two of the papers in the special edition. In broad review, the papers make a variety of welcome contributions; historical individually and small sample phenomenological and also more metaphorically in terms of articulations of the haunting nature of collective and intergenerational trauma in the social and cultural sphere. I review the papers from a parapsychological perspective, considering the evidence drawn from parapsychological studies where it supports or adds to the topics of each paper. In concluding this response, it seems clear that therapists often work from first principles when relating to clients’ anomalous experiences, and that the papers of the special edition each offer practising therapists some important evidential and practical insights into working with client presentations of ostensibly paranormal and anomalous experiences.
Mit diesem Artikel gebe ich eine Erwiderung auf die in dieser Sonderausgabe enthaltenen Beiträge zum Paranormalen innerhalb der Psychotherapie. Ich greife dabei weitestgehend auf meine Erfahrungen und Arbeiten als Parapsychologe zurück. Zu Beginn des Artikels gehe ich zunächst auf die definitorischen Unterschiede in Bezug auf das Paranormale von dessen Befürwortern aber auch Kritikern ein. Letzten Endes erachte ich diese unterschiedlichen Auffassungen abseits der Beziehung zwischen Therapeuten und Klienten, insbesondere auf Grundlage einer phänomenologischen Haltung, als problematisch – was meiner Meinung nach von mindestens zwei Beiträgen dieser Sonderausgabe transportiert wird. Im Großen und Ganzen jedoch liefern alle Artikel eine Reihe nützlicher Informationen; historisch betrachtet und anhand einiger phänomenologischer Beispiele, vor allem aber auf einer metaphorischen Ebene im Hinblick auf eine ‘unheilvollen Natur’ intergenerationaler und kollektiver Traumata in der gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Sphäre. Ich nehme die Beiträge aus einer parapsychologischen Perspektive in den Blick und nehme gleichzeitig, soweit sinnvoll, für einige der Artikel Bezug auf aktuelle parapsychologische Studien. Zusammenfassend lässt sich feststellen, dass Therapeuten in Bezug auf anomale Erfahrungen von Klienten oftmals mit einigen Grundprinzipien reagieren. Hierzu liefern die Artikel dieser Sonderausgabe den Praktikern einige wichtige Informationen und Einblicke in die Arbeit mit Klienten und deren anscheinend anormalen bzw. paranormalen Erfahrungen.
En este artículo doy una respuesta a las diferentes ponencias en esta edición especial acerca de lo paranormal y la psicoterapia; mi respuesta corresponde a cómo he articulado el tema a través de mi carrera como parapsicólogo. En la introducción he notado diferencias en la definición entre los partidarios y los no partidarios en términos de lo que podría ser considerado como ‘paranormal’. Se discute que las diferencias en definición, obviando la relación del terapeuta con las experiencias inusuales del cliente, es crítica al tomar una posición fenomenológica la encuentra eco en al menos dos de los artículos en esta edición especial. De una manera amplia los artículos presentan una variedad de contribuciones históricamente, individualmente, fenomenológicamente en menor grado y también metafóricamente, en términos de las relaciones de cómo se articula la inquietante naturaleza del trauma colectivo e intergeneracional en la esfera cultural y social. Se revisan los artículos desde la perspectiva parapsicológica, considerando la evidencia extraída de estudios parapsicológicos los cuales apoyan o agregan algo a los tópicos de cada artículo. Al concluir esta respuesta parece claro que los psicoterapeutas, frecuentemente trabajan apoyándose en ciertos principios en su relación con las experiencias anómalas de sus clientes y que cada artículo en esta edición especial ofrece a los terapeutas insights prácticos y evidentes para trabajar con clientes que presentan ostensiblemente experiencias paranormales y anómalas.
In questo lavoro cerco di fornire una risposta ai contributi proposti in questa special edition su paranormale e psicoterapia, risposta articolata in buona parte sulla mia esperienza come parapsicologo. Nell'introduzione rilevo le differenze nelle definizioni tra sostenitori ed oppositori rispetto a ciò che potrebbe essere 'paranormale' anche se io sostengo, in ultima analisi, che indipendentemente dalle differenze di definizione è fondamentale assumere una posizione fenomenologica, il che rimanda ad almeno un paio di contributi di questa edizione speciale. In senso ampio la lettura dei contributi presenta aspetti introduttivi, storie individualizzate e piccoli campioni fenomenologici, più metaforicamente una articolazione della natura del trauma collettivo e intergenerazionale in ambito sociale e culturale. Considero i contributi da una prospettiva parapsicologica, esaminando le evidenze tratte da studi parapsicologici che supportano o arricchiscono le argomentazioni di ogni contributo. Nel concludere, sembra chiaro che i terapeuti spesso lavorano a partire da principi fondamentali quando hanno a che fare con clienti che presentano esperienze anomale, inoltre ciascun contributi di questo numero offre importanti spunti pratici per il lavoro con clienti che presentano esperienze apparentemente paranormali e anomale.
Dans cet article je passe en revue les articles qui composent ce numéro spécial sur paranormal et psychothérapie et j'articule ma réponse aux articles à ma pratique de parapsychologue. Dans l'introduction je marque une différence définitionnelle entre les défenseurs et les pourfendeurs en termes ce qui pourrait être considéré comme 'paranormal' tout en argumentant qu'au final, différences définitionnelles mises à part, ce qui est essentiel c’est que la relation que le thérapeute a avec les expériences inhabituelles du client suive une attitude phénoménologique, ce qui est abordé dans au moins deux des articles de ce numéro spécial. De manière générale les articles fournissent une série d'heureuses contributions; historiquement, individuellement, à l’aide d’un petit échantillon quant à la recherche et phénoménologiquement mais également plus métaphoriquement en termes d'articulations entre la nature tourmentée du trauma collectif et intergénérationnel dans la sphère sociale et culturelle. Je passe en revue les articles avec une perspective parapsychologique, considérant les preuves apportées par les études parapsychologiques qui soutiennent ou ajoutent des éléments au propos de chaque article. Dans ma conclusion il apparaît clairement que les thérapeutes travaillent à partir de principes premiers lorsqu'ils sont en relation avec les expériences anormales des clients et que chacun des articles qui composent ce numéro spécial offre aux praticiens des preuves importantes et des perspectives pratiques pour le travail avec des clients présentant des expériences ostensiblement paranormales et anormales.
Σε αυτό το άρθρο παρέχω μια δημοσιευμένη γραπτή απάντηση στα άρθρα της παρούσας ειδικής έκδοσης για το παραφυσικό και την ψυχοθεραπεία που βασίζεται σε μεγάλο βαθμό στην καριέρα μου ως παραψυχολόγου. Στην εισαγωγή σημειώνω τις διαφορές του ορισμού μεταξύ αυτών που τίθενται υπέρ και εναντίον του τι θα μπορούσε να είναι «παραφυσικό» παρόλο που υποστηρίζω τελικά ότι οι διαφορές στον ορισμό εκτός της σχέσης του θεραπευτή με την ασυνήθιστη εμπειρία του πελάτη αποτελούν περισσότερο μια φαινομενολογική στάση που αντανακλάται σε τουλάχιστον δύο από τα άρθρα στην ειδική έκδοση. Με μια γενική ματιά τα άρθρα προσφέρουν μια ποικιλία από συνεισφορές: ιστορικά διακεκριμένες, φαινομελογικές σε μικρό δείγμα και πιο μεταφορικά από την άποψη των διαρθρώσεων της στοιχειωμένης φύσης από συλλογικά και διαγενεακά τραύματα στον κοινωνικό και πολιτιστικό τομέα. Επανεξετάζω τα άρθρα από παραψυχολογική σκοπιά, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τα στοιχεία που προέρχονται από παραψυχολογικές μελέτες όπου υποστηρίζεται ή προστίθεται στα θέματα του κάθε άρθρου. Συμπεραίνοντας, είναι σαφές ότι οι θεραπευτές συχνά δουλεύουν με τα στοιχειώδη, όταν συνδέονται με πελάτες με ανώμαλες εμπειρίες, και ότι τα άρθρα της ειδικής έκδοσης προσφέρουν στους ασκούμενους θεραπευτές κάποιες σημαντικές εμπειρικές και πρακτικές γνώσεις για να εργάζονται με πελάτες που παρουσιάζουν φαινομενικά παραφυσικές και ανώμαλες εμπειρίες.
