The narratives of parental alienation

ABSTRACT

When families are in conflict, high levels of emotional activity such as anger, fear, loss and grief in the adults involved can affect children and young people in the family, particularly as a result of conscious and unconscious adult emotional pressure and manipulation. An aspect of this is when one parent uses their power over a child to excommunicate the other parent. This is sometimes called parental alienation. This terminology arises from the work of Richard Gardner, who developed the notion of Parental Alienation Syndrome. What lies behind the label parental alienation, the journey and implications of that phenomenon are explored. A consideration of the limitations of the UK court system reveals the lonely predicament of the child. This paper considers how psychotherapists may help young people to make sense of their experience of being caught up in destructive family narratives by claiming their own understanding and narrative.

Wenn Familien in Konflikt geraten, kann ein hohes Maß an psychischer Aktivität wie Wut, Angst, Verlust und Trauer bei den betroffenen Erwachsenen Kinder und Jugendliche in der Familie betreffen, insbesondere aufgrund des bewussten und unbewussten emotionalen Drucks und der Manipulation von Erwachsenen. Ein Aspekt davon ist, wenn ein Elternteil seine Macht über ein Kind nutzt, um den anderen Elternteil zu exkommunizieren. Dies wird manchmal als elterliche Entfremdung bezeichnet. Diese Terminologie ergibt sich aus der Arbeit von Richard Gardner, der den Begriff des Parental Alienation Syndrome (Gardner, 1987, 1992) entwickelte. Was hinter dem Label elterliche Entfremdung steckt, die Reise und die Auswirkungen dieses Phänomens werden untersucht. Eine Betrachtung der Einschränkungen des britischen Gerichtssystems zeigt die einsame Lage des Kindes. Cuando las familias están en conflicto, altos niveles de actividad psicológica como la ira, el miedo, la pérdida y el dolor en los adultos involucrados pueden afectar a los niños y jóvenes de la familia, particularmente como resultado de la presión emocional y la manipulación emocional de adultos conscientes e inconscientes. Un aspecto de esto es cuando uno de los padres usa su poder sobre un niño para excomulgar al otro padre. Esto a veces se llama alienación parental. Esta terminología surge del trabajo de Richard Gardner, quien desarrolló la noción de Síndrome de Alienación Parental (Gardner 1987,1992). Se explora lo que hay detrás de la etiqueta de alienación parental, el viaje y las implicaciones de ese fenómeno. Una consideración de las limitaciones del sistema judicial del Reino Unido revela la situación solitaria del niño. Este artículo considera cómo los psicoterapeutas pueden ayudar a los jóvenes a dar sentido a su experiencia de estar atrapados en historias familiares destructivas al pedir comprensión de su propia vivencia.

Quando le famiglie sono in conflitto sono elevati i livelli dell’attività psicologica, rabbia, paura, perdita e dolore negli adulti coinvolti possono influenzare i bambini e i giovani della famiglia, in particolare a causa della pressione e manipolazione emotiva e inconscia dell’adulto. Un aspetto di ciò è quando un genitore usa il proprio potere su un figlio per escludere l’altro genitore. Questo comportamento può essere chiamato alienazione genitoriale. Si tratta di un termine che deriva dal lavoro di Richard Gardner, che ha sviluppato la nozione di Sindrome da alienazione parentale (Gardner, 1987, 1992). Viene esplorato ciò che si nasconde dietro l’etichetta alienazione genitoriale, il percorso e le implicazioni di questo fenomeno. Una considerazione dei limiti del sistema giudiziario del Regno Unito rivela la situazione di solitudine del bambino. Questo articolo considera come gli psicoterapeuti possano aiutare i giovani a dare un senso alla loro esperienza di essere coinvolti in narrative familiari distruttive rivendicando il proprio pensiero e l’autonoma narrazione.

Lorsque les familles sont en conflit, des niveaux élevés d’activité psychologique telle que la colère, la peur, la perte ou le deuil des adultes peuvent affecter les enfants et les jeunes de cette famille, en particulier si c’est la résultante des pressions émotionnelles et de la manipulation des adultes, conscientes et inconscientes. Un des aspects est lorsqu’un des parents use de son pouvoir sur l’enfant pour excommunier l’autre parent. C’est ce qu’on appelle parfois l’aliénation parentale. Cette terminologie trouve son origine dans les travaux de Richard Gardner, qui a développé la notion de Syndrome d’Aliénation Parentale (Gardner, 1987,1992). Ce qui se cache sous cette étiquette d’aliénation parentale, le trajet et les implications de ce phénomène sont explorés dans cet article. Une considération des limites du système judiciaire britannique révèle la situation d’isolement des enfants. Cet article envisage ce que les psychothérapeutes peuvent mettre en place pour aider les jeunes à comprendre leur vécu d’être coincé dans une histoire familiale destructrice et favoriser leur propre compréhension et récit.

Αυτό το άρθρο παρουσιάζει μια φανταστική φαινομενολογία της συνεργασίας με έναν νεαρό ενήλικα στην ψυχοθεραπεία. Η περίπτωση δείχνει τη σημασία της σιωπηρής και/ή ασυνείδητης «μετατόπισης» του νοήματος και της επικοινωνίας μεταξύ πελάτη και θεραπευτή. Ως θεραπευτές μπορεί να συναντήσουμε αυτό που ήταν απροσδόκητο σε εμάς στον πελάτη μας. Αυτό που αναδύεται είναι πτυχές του τρόπου με τον οποίο εξηγούμε/αντιλαμβανόμαστε αναδρομικά, οι οποίες διερευνώνται εν συντομία μέσα από τις αισθήσεις της διαφοροποίησης, της αποξένωσης, της καταστολής, της μυθοπλασίας και του θανάτου. Ο εξορθολογισμός και η επιστημονικοποίηση της εμπειρίας εισάγουν κάτι νεκρό. Διερευνάται η σημασία του να μιλάει ο πελάτης για τον εαυτό του. Οι νέοι ειδικά, φαίνεται ότι πρέπει να βρουν τη δική τους βιωματική γλώσσα, χωρίς να συνθλίβονται από τις λέξεις (και την παρουσία) των άλλων, αλλά το πώς αυτό είναι δυνατό μοιάζει δύσκολο.

Sally Parsloe

Sally Parsloe took a Law degree at King's College, London and trained as a solicitor. She acted in Family proceedings for children and adults for 35 years and was a member of the Law Society Children Panel.  She completed an MSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Roehampton University. She has worked in the NHS, and as a therapist within a Family Mediation organisation in London. She now has a private practice in London as a psychotherapist and as a couples counsellor. She is a member of the Southern Association of Psychotherapists and Counsellors (SAFPAC) and is Chair of the SAFPAC Ethics Committee. She is also a member of the Critical Psychotherapy Network
