Experimental method of separation of the volume and surface components in an electron energy-loss spectrum

Pages 619-633 | Received 02 Dec 1986, Accepted 10 Sep 1987, Published online: 20 Aug 2006

Abstract

The electron energy-loss spectrum collected in a scanning transmission electron microscope contains a surface-energy-loss contribution as well as a volume-loss part. An experimental procedure is developed to separate these two components. This procedure is applied to spectra collected from a slightly oxidized iron film, a fresh palladium film and an oxidized palladium film to obtain information about the electronic structure of the bulk as well as of the surface of the specimen.
