The relative centrality of life domains among Jews and Arabs in Israel: the effect of culture, ethnicity, and demographic variables

Abstract

The centrality of major life domains (work, family community leisure and religion) have not, to date, been studied among Arabs in Israel. This paper examines life domains centrality of 909 Jews and 286 Arabs (or Palestinians that have Israeli citizenship), who work in the Israeli labor market. The findings reveal significant differences in the importance of all life domains. Work centrality, as well as the importance of religion and community is significantly higher among Arabs than among Jews. Among Jews, the importance of family and leisure are significantly higher than among Arabs. A hierarchical regression analysis indicates that demographic variables have a low ability to explain the differences in the centrality of life domains among Jews and Arabs. The findings can be explained by cultural differences, the high degree of segregation, occupational discrimination, and mainly by the regional Palestinian/Arab-Israeli conflict.

La centralidad de los principales ámbitos de la vida (trabajo, comunidad, familia, ocio y religión) entre los árabes en Israel no ha sido estudiado hasta la fecha. Este artículo examina los ámbitos centrales de la vida de 909 Judios y 286 Árabes (o palestinos que tienen ciudadanía israelí), que trabajan en el mercado laboral israelí. Los resultados revelan diferencias significativas en la importancia de todos los ámbitos de la vida. La centralidad del trabajo, así como la importancia de la religión y la comunidad son significativamente más importantes entre los árabes que entre los Judios. Entre los Judios, la familia y el ocio son significativamente más importantes que entre los Árabes. Un análisis de regresión jerárquica indica que las variables demográficas tienen una baja capacidad para explicar las diferencias en la centralidad de los ámbitos de la vida entre los Judios y árabes. Los resultados se pueden explicar por medio de las diferencias culturales, el alto grado de segregación, discriminación en el trabajo, y sobre todo por el conflicto regional árabe/palestino -israelí.
