Sexual and alcohol risk behaviours of immigrant Latino men in the South‐eastern USA

Abstract

Little is known about the intersections of immigration, masculinity and sexual risk behaviours among recently arrived Latino men in the USA. Nine immigrant Latino men from three urban housing communities in the South‐eastern USA used photovoice to identify and explore their lived experiences. From the participants' photographs and words, thirteen themes emerged within four domains. The immigration experience and sociocultural norms and expectations of masculinity were factors identified decreasing Latino men's sense of power and increasing stress, which lead to sexual risk. Latino community strengths and general community strengths were factors that participants identified as promoting health and preventing risk. These themes influenced the development of a conceptual model to explain risk among immigrant Latino men. This model requires further exploration and may prove useful in intervention development.

Résumé

Les croisements entre l'immigration, la masculinité et les comportements sexuels à risque dans la population d'hommes latinos récemment arriveés aux USA sont peu documentés. Neuf hommes issus de l'immigration latino et vivant dans trois communautés urbaines du Sud Est des USA ont employé la méthode «photovoice» pour identifier et explorer leurs expériences vécues. Des photographies et des mots employés par les participants, treize thèmes ont émergé, et se regroupent en quatre domaines. L'expérience de l'immigration, les normes et les attentes socio culturelles en rapport avec la masculinité sont identifiées comme des facteurs de diminution du sentiment de pouvoir chez les hommes latinos et d'augmentation du stress, qui conduisent au risque sexuel. Les participants reconnaissent les forces de la communauté latino et celles de la communauté en général comme des facteurs de promotion de la santé et de la prévention des risques. Ces thèmes ont influencé l'élaboration d'un modèle conceptuel pour expliquer le risque parmi les immigrés latinos. Ce modèle exige une exploration plus approfondie et pourrait s'avérer utile à l'élaboration des interventions.

Resumen

Poco se conoce sobre las intersecciones de inmigración, masculinidad y conductas de riesgo sexual de hombres latinoamericanos que acaban de llegar a los Estados Unidos. Nueve inmigrantes latinoamericanos de tres comunidades urbanas en el sureste de los Estados Unidos usaron la técnica de fotovoz para identificar y explorar sus experiencias vividas. De las fotografías y palabras de los participantes, surgieron trece temas dentro de cuatro dominios. La experiencia de la inmigración y las normas y expectativas socioculturales de masculinidad fueron los factores identificados que hacían disminuir la sensación de poder entre estos inmigrantes latinoamericanos y les provocaban mayor estrés, lo que conducía a arriesgar su salud sexual. Los participantes indicaron que los beneficios de la comunidad latinoamericana y las ventajas de la comunidad en general eran factores que fomentaban la salud y prevenían riesgos. Estos temas han influido en el desarrollo de un modelo conceptual para explicar los riesgos que corre la población masculina de latinoamericanos inmigrantes. Este modelo debería ser analizado más exhaustivamente y podría ser útil para crear programas de intervención.

We note that although the classification Hispanic/Latino comprises a broad spectrum of individuals, countries of origin and cultural meanings and perspectives, like many recently arrived Spanish‐speaking immigrants to the South‐eastern USA, the participants in this study chose to identify themselves by the term Latino.
