Notes

1. Whether these practices should be considered counselling in accordance with a strict definition of the term is up for debate. However, we argue that since they are being carried out ‘in the name of counselling’ they need to be examined in that light.

2. This is made apparent in the papers by Burchardt, Igonya and Moyer, and by Rasmussen.

3. The sociologist Simmel (Citation1957) famously analysed this mechanism of simultaneous closure and connection with regard to bridges and doors.

4. The papers by Rasmussen and by van Dijk make this clear.

5. Burchardt (Citation2013) ethnographically explores how these assumptions operate in the attempts to regulate information flows in HIV/AIDS support groups in South Africa.

6. This also done in the papers by Richters, Rutayisire and Slegh, and by Tankink.
