Against the background of these concerns, in this paper I reflect on recent ethnographic work in the Indian state of West Bengal, which explored the development of community-based HIV prevention and rights-based initiatives for sexual and gender minority peoples in regional towns, beyond urban centres – especially male-to-male sexual subjects and male-to-female transgender subjects (those most often the ‘targets’ of the initiatives explored in the course of the ethnographic work).
