The role of the illusion in the construction of erotic desire: narratives from heterosexual men who have occasional sex with transgender women

Abstract

Little is known about men’s sexual desire for and erotic attraction to male-to-female transgender women. To better understand how erotic desire is constructed, this study examined the narratives of a sample of heterosexual men who had had an occasional sexual encounter with a transgender woman. Open-ended qualitative interviews were conducted with 16 heterosexual men who reported at least one sexual encounter with a transgender woman in the previous 12 months. Using principles of Grounded Theory, three themes emerged: (1) the erotic desire that transpired from a transgender woman’s construction of her femininity, (2) the sexual act that dictated the specific navigation of a transgender woman’s penis and (3) the sexual dissonance that resulted from being a heterosexually identified man having sex with a partner who had a penis. These themes reflected how the participants defined and negotiated their sexual encounters, both psychologically through their understanding of sex with a transgender woman with a penis, and physically through the navigation of specific sex acts. The role of the ‘illusion’ was central to the meaning and construction of erotic desire. These narratives provided another framework for continuing discourse on the complexity of erotic desire.

On sait peu de choses sur le désir sexuel et l’attirance érotique des hommes pour les femmes transgenres de l’homme vers la femme. Afin d’améliorer la compréhension de la construction du désir érotique, cette étude a exploré les récits recueillis dans un échantillon d’hommes hétérosexuels qui avaient eu une rencontre occasionnelle avec une femme transgenre. Des entretiens qualitatifs ouverts ont été conduits avec 16 hommes hétérosexuels rapportant au moins une rencontre sexuelle avec une femme transgenre dans les 12 mois précédents. L’application des principes de la théorie ancrée a permis l’émergence de trois thèmes : (1) le désir érotique inspiré par la construction de la féminité d’une femme transgenre ; (2) l’acte sexuel dictant un comportement spécifique vis-à-vis du pénis d’une femme transgenre ; et (3) la dissonance sexuelle résultant du fait d’être un homme identifié comme hétérosexuel qui a des rapports sexuels avec une partenaire féminine possédant un pénis. Ces thèmes reflétaient la manière dont les participants définissaient et négociaient leurs rencontres sexuelles, à la fois d’un point de vue psychologique à travers leur compréhension des rapports sexuels avec une femme transgenre possédant un pénis, et d’un point de vue physique à travers la maîtrise d’actes sexuels précis. Le rôle de « l’illusion » s’est révélé comme étant central à la signification et à la construction du désir érotique. Ces récits ont fourni un cadre nouveau pour la poursuite du discours sur la complexité du désir érotique.

Resumen

El conocimiento en torno a los deseos sexuales y a la atracción erótica que experimentan los hombres por las mujeres transgénero (hombres que se transforman en mujeres) es reducido. Para comprender mejor cómo se construye el deseo erótico, el presente estudio analizó las narrativas de una muestra de hombres heterosexuales que habían sostenido encuentros sexuales ocasionales con mujeres transgénero. Para ello se realizaron entrevistas cualitativas con 16 hombres heterosexuales que indicaron haber tenido al menos un encuentro sexual con una mujer transgénero durante los doce meses anteriores. A partir del uso de los principios de la Teoría Fundamentada, se identificaron tres categorías de respuestas: (1) el deseo erótico resultante de la construcción de feminidad por parte de la mujer transgénero; (2) el acto sexual que implicó específicamente sortear el pene de la mujer transgénero; y (3) la disonancia sexual que resulta del hecho de ser hombre que se identifica como heterosexual a la hora de tener relaciones sexuales con una pareja con pene. Estos temas dan cuenta del modo en que los participantes definen y concilian sus encuentros sexuales: psicológicamente, mediante su comprensión del hecho de tener relaciones con una mujer transgénero con pene; y físicamente, a partir de la realización de actos sexuales específicos. El rol desempeñado por la “ilusión” fue fundamental tanto para la significación como para la construcción del deseo erótico. Estas narrativas proporcionan elementos adicionales para enmarcar el discurso en construcción sobre la complejidad que asiste al deseo erótico.

1. Given that heterosexually identified men were the targeted sample, a trans woman was defined as such by the study respondents. Although not an eligibility criterion, none of the trans women sexual partners of the study respondents had gender confirmation surgery.

3. A cisgender woman was defined as an individual who was assigned the female sex at birth and whose gender identity was woman.
