Influence of personality traits on Facebook engagement and their effects on socialization behavior and satisfaction with university life

ABSTRACT

Several factors influence Facebook users’ engagement. This study investigates the correlations between Facebook engagement and users’ personality traits. This study also analyses the impact of Facebook engagement on students’ socialization behavior and their satisfaction with their university life. A dataset of 994 Malaysian students was collected and used for analysis. The outcome of the analysis illustrates that students’ personality traits have a positive influence on Facebook engagement. Subsequently, Facebook engagement was found to have an influence over students’ socialization behavior and their satisfaction with university life. The results can be used by educators as a guide for their curriculum development, i.e., consideration of wider usage of Facebook in conducting courses.

Ainin Sulaiman obtained her PhD from University of Birmingham, UK. Prior to that she did her Masters of Business Administration in the University of Stirling, United Kingdom. Her undergraduate qualification, was obtained from the Malaysian Northern University. She has held several administrative posts at the Faculty Business and Accountancy (Dean, Deputy Dean and Head of Department) over the years. She is currently serving as the Dean of the Equitable Society Research Cluster, University of Malaya. Her research interest includes social media, social networks, IT adoption and usage and organizational performance [email: [email protected]].

Dr Noor Ismawati Jaafar is an Associate Professor and Head of Operations and Management Information Systems (MIS) Department, Faculty of Business and Accountancy, University of Malaya. She obtained her Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) qualification from Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM), Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. She holds a professional qualification as Certified Financial Accountant (CFiA) from Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA). She is a member of the Association for Information Systems (AIS). She has published in many refereed journals such as Government Information Quarterly, Computer in Human Behavior, Behavior and Information Technology, Industrial Data and Management Systems, Telematics and Informatics, International Journal of Mobile Communication and Internet Research. Her research areas are IT management, IT governance and human computer interaction. She is currently involved in researches on social media governance effect on employee, Internet addiction, IT occupational culture and national consumer confidence index [email: [email protected]].

Alireza Tamjidyamcholo obtained his PhD from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University of Malaya, Malaysia. He received master degree from Tehran Islamic Azad University, Iran. His main research interests are information security management, information security risk assessment and knowledge management [email: [email protected]].
