Burnout, compassion fatigue and professional resilience in caregivers of children with disabilities in Ukraine

ABSTRACT

The disability and professional caregiving literature includes little descriptive data on the professional quality of life of the caregivers of individuals with emotional, intellectual, and physical disabilities in post-Soviet countries. The inherently stressful conditions in which caregivers’ practise has the potential to impact the compassion-ability of the caregiver as well as the quality of care for the individuals they serve. This study aims to bring insight into the professional experiences of those caregivers providing long-term care to children with disabilities in Ukraine. This exploratory study examined self-reported levels of compassion fatigue, professional burnout and compassion satisfaction, in a privately funded rehabilitation centre and a publicly funded orphanage. Results revealed that despite the difficult working conditions, caregivers experienced moderate levels of compassion fatigue, and above average levels of compassion satisfaction, suggesting that the positive aspects of caring for children with severe disabilities may be moderating the deleterious effects of the work.

В літературі з питань інвалідності та професійного догляду міститься небагато описових даних про якість життя опікунів осіб з емоційними, інтелектуальними та фізичними порушеннями в пострадянських країнах. По суті, стресові умови, в яких працюють опікуни, можуть впливати на їх здатність співчувати, а також якість догляду за особами, яких вони обслуговують. Це дослідження має на меті вивчення професійного досвіду спеціалістів, які надають тривалу опіку дітям з інвалідністю в Україні. У цьому пошуковому дослідженні розглянуте особисте оцінювання рівня виснаженості співчуття, професійного вигорання та задоволення співчуття у реабілітаційному центрі із приватним фінансуванням та державному інтернаті. Результати показали, що, незважаючи на складні умови праці, опікуни мали помірні показники виснаженості співчуття та показник задоволення співчуття – вище середнього, що свідчить про те, що позитивні сторони догляду за дітьми з важкими вадами можуть зменшити шкідливі наслідки роботи.

R. Allan Allday, PhD, BCBA-D is an Associate Professor of Special Education and Director of the Applied Behaviour Analysis Program at the University of Kentucky. He served as a Fulbright Scholar to Ukraine. Dr Allday’s professional and research interests centre on decreasing the impact of severe childhood behaviour problems on family life, school performance and social adaptability with a specific focus on how adult behaviour directly affects child behaviour.

Jason M. Newell, PhD, LICSW is an Professor and Social Work Program Director in the Department of Behavioural and Social Sciences at the University of Montevallo. His research and specialty areas include: clinical social work practice with the mentally ill; treatment of anxiety, trauma-related, and mood disorders; self-care and professional resilience; practice with veterans and military families; and child welfare.

Yevheniy Sukovskyy, MA is private consultant of families and professionals dealing with behaviour issues of their children or clients. He obtained a master’s degree in special education in the USA under Fulbright program. Yevheniy’s professional interests are on decreasing severe behaviours of people with disabilities in families and in orphanages in Ukraine, changing attitudes toward severe behaviour problems in the community, and spreading evidence-based education and behaviour practices in Ukraine.
