When the above article was first published online, some data in the Introduction and the Vignette variables section were factually incorrect and there were errors in the keys of figures 1 and 4.

This has now been corrected in both the print and online versions to: “In 2008, the Muslim population living in Germany was estimated to be around 4.1 million” (Introduction); “Mosque community” (Fig 1); “Mosque/church community” (Fig 4).
